BLM State Wilderness Study DocumentsIn , Congress passed the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, directing the BLM to identify and review all the public lands under its administration which possess the wilderness characteristics described in the Wilderness Act. The BLM conducted three phases of wilderness review: inventory, study, and reporting. Situated 20 miles east of Bend, Oregon, The Badlands is the city’s backyard Wilderness area. Oregon Natural Desert Association worked for nearly 20 years to secure Wilderness protection for acre area notable for its ancient junipers, volcanic rock formations, and Native American cultural sites.
